Top of the Hill Market

I went to the Top of the Hill Market yesterday for a take-out lunch. It's located at 185 E. Evergreen Ave. in Chesnut Hill. It's off of the Avenue (Germantown Avenue) behind the bank on the corner. There's usually a sign, located at the alley that leads to the parking lot behind the bank, that lists the day's specials. I go there a lot because they have a lot of variety and very good quality.

I ordered a tuna fish on whole wheat with lettuce, tomato, and a slice of cheese. And, a turkey club on white bread with lettuce, tomato, no toast. Total cost was $13.00. There sandwiches are a very good size. They have recently started roasting the turkeys in their kitchen which make the turkey clubs very tasty.

They have a small salad bar, soups, and a variety of cooked dishes made fresh everyday. I particularly like the mushroom barley soup, turkey and corn soup, and the saute chicken. They have outdoor seating, and a small counter indoors. They are open Monday thru Saturday from 8:00am - 6:00pm, and 10:00am - 4:00 pm on Sunday.

Chestnut Hill

My daughter and I went to Chestnut Hill's Fall for the Arts Festival. It was a beautiful fall day and the turnout was incredible. It appeared to me as if there were more vendors than at past festivals. I got a plate of Indian food from Bhagya's Kitchen which is located in the Farmer's Market. I got the non-vegetarian platter which had lemon rice and tandori chicken. It was good but the food is much better when purchased from the market.

There appeared to be quite a few booths displaying various types of photographs. There just seems to be a lot of competition, for passersby attention and dollars, in the photography category. Do they really make money at these things? There was one pleasant surprise. At the top of the hill they had a band whose name was listed as Zydeco. They provided fun music that had a few people dancing. I told my daughter we wouldn't stay long but we strolled around for about 2 hours. My only purchase was two containers of local honey and then we headed home for some yard work.

Delilah's at Reading Terminal

Yesterday I had jury duty. One block from the courthouse at 12th and Filbert is Reading Terminal Market. I've always enjoyed coming here because it's so alive and there are a variety of different eating establishments from which to choose. Today I had a jones for fried chicken so I went to Delilah's. I ordered a fried chicken platter that cost $9.25. With that you get 2 sides and cornbread. I wanted string beans and potato salad, they did not have either of those choices. I then ordered greens and candied sweet potatoes. It was very good. My only complaint was with the fried chicken. It was cooked perfectly, crispy batter and piping hot. But I felt that the chicken was lacking in flavor which usually comes from seasoning placed in the batter and/or on the chicken. It's not that the chicken tasted bad it just wasn't distinctive. I like Delilah's food and I will return for more.
